Frequently asked questions
Does my pet need to be current on vaccinations?
Yes, King County requires us to make sure your pet is current on their rabies vaccine. This is the only vaccine we require, however, we do recommend that you keep your pet current on their distemper and bordatella (kennel cough) vaccination as well, not only for your pet's protection but also the protection of the other dogs in our salon. We also ask that if you recently adopted your pet from a shelter, please wait at least two weeks after bringing them home to make them an appointment with us to limit exposing our salon dogs to a communicable disease your new pet may have caught from the shelter.
How often does my dog need to be groomed?
Most dogs should be groomed every 6-8 weeks. If their haircut tends to be on the longer side, once per month is recommended to keep the hair from matting
My dog can be nippy, can he/she still be groomed?
Most of the time, we are still able to groom dogs with small or medium aggression issues. Please note, that we reserve the right to use a muzzle on your pet not only for our groomer's safety, but also for your pet's. muzzles do not harm the dogs and in most cases, causes them to settle down and allows our groomers to get things done faster so the pet can go home quickly and with less stress.
How long can I expect my pet to be at the salon?
Most grooming appointments require the dog to stay at the salon for 3 - 3 1/2 hrs. If your dog is just having a bath and brush with us, that time may be reduced to 2-2 1/2 hr depending upon how busy the groomer is that particular day. if your dog is extra large, having a demat service or more intricate service, they may be here longer. we call the customer immediately when the groom is complete. we appreciate your understanding in this matter.
At what age do I get my puppy groomed for the first time?
You should start working with your puppy on their grooming skills from day one, brushing, playing with feet, trimming toe nails, holding the face still and running the backside of a spoon over their nose and eyes as if you were the groomer holding a pair of scissors. putting fingers in ears, holding up the tail and having them stand on a table, and getting them used to the sound of an electric toothbrush or razor, will all help your puppy become used to the grooming process in order to avoid unwanted behavior that may result in potential injury.
As for the first haircut, puppies need to come in after their rabies vaccine has been done at 4 months of age. We try to make first visits quick and low stress by doing only a bath and partial haircut, (face, feet, sanitary trim) to introduce them to the whole process. their next visit is usually a full service. we believe in setting up the puppy for grooming success their whole life and appreciate your understanding in this matter.
Can I stay and watch my pet being groomed?
Yes you can, we do have chairs in our lobby where you can wait. However, we have found that sometimes can have an adverse effect on your dog. Most dogs are actually more anxious when you are around and spend all their time trying to get back to you, which makes the groomer's job more difficult. Therefore, we recommend that you do not stay and may ask you to leave if we believe the quality of the groom is being compromised by owners' presence, we will call you as soon as your pet is finished. If you still wish to stay, we ask that you do not talk or interact with your dog while he is with the groomer and usually ask that you stay out of the dog's line of sight for everyone's ease of work and safety. Please bear in mind, the process takes between 3 - 3 1/2 hours so your dog will be in kennels before/during/after the grooming process as the groomers work on more than one dog at a time.
Can I sedate my dog?
Some owners choose to sedate their animals for various reasons. If you choose to do this, it is ok. However, we ask that the pill be given 1 hour prior to arrival at the salon and that you inform the groomer that you have sedated them. Sorry, we are not a veterinarian, we can not prescribe or give your pet any drugs while under our care.
How do I keep my dog's coat looking nice between appts?
Brush, brush, brush. most dogs with hair more than a half an inch long require a brushing at least three times a week, if not daily. Get to know your pet's hair, if it tends to mat up, brush daily, and not just the top coat, make sure you fold back the hair and get the undercoat too, and the hair around the rear end, stomach and those long ears that get in the water bowl. If your pet gets wet for any reason, brush them out when they get mostly dry, this will prevent them from matting up. putting water on a mat will only make it tighten up so if you find them and can't get them out with a brush (DO NOT USE SCISSORS!!!!) call us for an appointment.
